Cornhole – and why it is so popular

Who doesn’t love a game of Cornhole? If you’ve been in the parking lot of a football game, walking past a pre-game tailgating party, you’ve probably seen a version of fans playing the game called ‘tailgate toss.’

That’s because Cincinnati Bengals fans introduced cornhole to fellow tailgaters from opposing teams, and it spread throughout the country from one NFL parking lot to the next like wildfire.

But where did it really start?

Some believe cornhole originated in Germany, where in 1325, a cabinet maker named Matthias Kuepermann, watching children throw stones into a dug hole, often with dire consequences to life and limb, invented a less dangerous way to play using bags filled with grain, and a box made of materials he had lying around his shop.

Others credit its beginnings to the Blackhawk tribe of Illinois.

And there is also a story that a Kentucky farmer in the 1800s was responsible for inventing the popular game.

Whatever its origins, the game, cornhole became popular in Cincinnati about 15 years ago and soon spread like wildfire to backyards, beaches, breweries, and campgrounds across every corner of the United States

Today, we find that cornhole games are sold all over the world, with an eye-watering variety of options. There are of course the traditional boards decorated with sports teams, family names, and college logos. And in addition, there are floating versions for pools, portable sets, and even a mobile app.

Why is this game so popular?

It is portable, suitable for all ages, requires minimal equipment, space and skill. And, is really suitable for all ages. What’s not to love?
